We’ve Come a Long Way Since the “Frankfurt Kitchen”

In Germany in 1926, an award winning Austrian architect named Margarete Lihotzky was commissioned to help solve the housing crisis in post war Germany. Using many of the best-use-of-space and work efficiency principles popularized by American Christine Frederick, who herself had studied Frederick Taylor's industrial time and motion experiments, Lihotsky went on to design the world's first mass produced fitted kitchen, meeting the demands of a mass housing project in Frankfurt fired by a utopian vision but limited by tiny floor plans and tight budgets.

Vancouver City Council Amends/Expands Laneway Housing

The amendments address impacts on neighbouring properties, provision of parking, livability of the units and length of the permitting process, with the intent of improving the fit of laneway housing into neighbourhoods. Additionally, the proposal includes the expansion of the LWH program to the remaining RS districts to equalize opportunity for laneway housing across all single family areas.

Built-Ins: Gotta’ love ’em!

Sanctuary is one of the basic joys of small spaces. A coziness and human scale that brings us back to reading by flashlight under the bedsheets or building "forts" in the bush. And so, too, for me, do all the odd cubbyholes and spaces often found in quirky older houses. But in a modern, minimalist decor, as well as making us feel cozy, built-ins also serve the very practical purposes of making the best use of limited space and of keeping clutter under control.
