Jake Fry Named Entrepreneur of the Year

For Immediate Release October 6, 2014

A leader and innovator in Vancouver’s small housing business has been named Entrepreneur of the Year.

Jake Fry, the founder and President of Smallworks, Vancouver’s premier laneway house builder, was recently selected as Ernst & Young’s (EY) Entrepreneur of the Year in the “manufacturing” category. The judges recognized Fry’s business acumen in building his thriving laneway and small housing construction business, which has now completed close to 90 laneway homes and has more than 20 under construction or in planning. He was also cited for his advocacy work in affordable housing in Vancouver and for his leadership in helping bring into being regulations that allow laneway houses to be built in Vancouver neighbourhoods.Smallworks specializes in homes that are up to 1,500 square feet in size but embody all of the quality and functionality of larger homes.

“Since the day I started Smallworks, I’ve been focused on creating pride in homeownership and in our community. It’s an honour and frankly quite humbling to be recognized for building a business that really is an extension of my passion,” Fry said. “I’ve long believed that there is no need to compromise quality or functionality when designing and building smaller footprint homes. With Smallworks, I’ve tried to attract and motivate people who share my passion and believe that we can build smaller homes that are more sustainable, highly livable, flexible spaces adapted to the unique needs and lifestyle of their occupants.”
The EY Entrepreneur of the Year is an annual global competition administered by Ernst & Young (EY). Canada’s Pacific Region competition is overseen by the Ernst & Young LLP Vancouver office, which selects judges from among local business leaders and past EOY winners. Judges look for a number of factors among nominees, including vision, leadership, financial performance and social responsibility.
